With the stunning 3,500km Marguerite Scenic Route on its doorstep, the MX-5 Club in Denmark has the perfect backdrop for roadster touring.
How did your club come together and when was it?The ground was laid for an MX-5 club in Denmark in 1990 when Jens M. Holm began importing MX-5 accessories. It meant MX-5 owners began to talk to each other a little more but it wasn't until April 1992 that the club officially formed, at a meeting sponsored by the Mazda. By the end of 1992 MX-5 Club Denmark had 46 members: the club was born!
What area does your club cover?Denmark!
How many members do you have and what's the mix?275: of which about 30% are female.
What are the most popular models in your club?NAs and NBs are most popular but NCs are coming up quickly. Some are imported from US and Germany and there are also many limited edition models.
Who has the most impressive car - and what is it?We love Dannie Pilgaard Sorensen's "super car painter's" car. He is renovating his red Mazda MX-5 NA 1.8 1994. To make constructive changes to a car that deviates from the original requires a permit in Denmark which makes it very expensive. Instead, maintenance is frequently performed. This prolongs the lifetime of the car - in a country where new cars are very expensive. Watch a video of Dannie's car
What road/ drive would you recommend for MX-5ers coming to Denmark to get the best experience? The Marguerite Route is a beautiful, scenic tourist route that takes in the major attractions in Denmark. The route is over 3,000km long, follows mainly minor roads and is thus unsuitable for tourist coaches and cars with caravans. But the route is of course perfect for a Mazda MX-5.The route is indicated by a brown sign with a white-yellow-Marguerite. On maps, the route is laid out with a green line.
What is the best thing about running an MX-5 in Denmark?Driving the MX5 in close contact with nature provides a great sense of freedom. It allows you to forget about the triviality of every day life. Denmark has beautiful scenery with short distances to coasts, cities and forests. You receive smiles from the people you meet when you run your MX-5 and the car is always ready to play.
What has been your best event and why?Once a month we meet at the club's permanent place "Maglesø", which is located on Zealand (Sjælland) or join "Go West's" many tours which mainly takes place in Jutland (Jylland) and on Funen (Fyn). The tours are arranged by different people so have different content and surprises. One of the most memorable tours was a trip to the island of Mors. There is fantastic nature reserve which provides views of the water from all sides. And the roads are small and curvy. All in all a fantastic experience from a seat in an MX-5. See a video.
Anything else coming up/ anything you want to tell us about? We announce all our events on the activity calendar on the club website. We have a planned visit to our Swedish neighbours which will include track racing at The Sturup Track. As 2009 is also the 20th anniversary of the MX-5's launch, we're looking at celebrating at the Nürburgring in Germany. If we pull off all the events we've planned there may well be a shortage of petrol in 2009, but someone has to keep the wheels of the economy rolling!
