Missing trim or rust on door?

Hi

Just signed up. Son and I have had a Mk2 for a year - we love it. It gets lots of TLC and polish - naturally - so when cleaning it today I was surprised to see a rusty part that wasn't there a few days ago.

Pix are worth thousands of words, so here are the offside and nearside. Question - is the shiny black part forward of the quarterlight a bit of plastic trim that's come off, or has corrosion suddenly, and I do mean suddenly, appeared. If it's a part, what do I ask the Mazda dealer for?

If not, then I guess it's 1200 W&D, etch primer and satin black.

I do not think any trim is missing.  I have just had a look at mine (2004 Mk. 2.5) and the strip which is black on yours is painted in the body colour on mine.  Possibly someone has painted it in the past!

A bit of Autoglym rubber care on the dull piece will have it looking lovely and shiny again.
