Garmin sat nav

I have , sorry had, a Garmin European "maps for life" sat nav. It worked fine then I foolishly plugged it into my PC & went on Garmin's site where I got a message that a new map was available. So I downloaded it, it took close on 2 hours. It finished OK with a message saying the update was complete.

Tried it today & the damn thing says it can't unlock the maps so I now have a cabbage on my dashboard. I followed Garmin's 21 step procedure to unlock the maps but it didn't work.

I googled "cannot unlock maps" & was inundated with threads from irate Garmin owners with just that problem.

Anyone know of a fix?

I don't have a Garmin, I've got a TomTom GO730 but I had a similar problem and got onto the TomTom help page. There was a button to 'talk' to a help desk person and they were terrific. talked me through how to reset and get the map working.

Maybe Garmin have a similar help function?

Also: never ask someone if they're from Yorkshire. If they're not, they'll be embarrassed. If they are, they'll already have told you.

I eventually got thro to Garmin support where a knowledgeable guy talked me thro' getting my new map unlocked. Now all OK again & my vital addresses for our upcoming Loire valley tour are loaded into the device. Up to now I've always depended on my unerring sense of direction Embarassed but last year, having got lost once or thrice in Brittany I've bitten the bullet and bowed to my better half's advice (wouldn't call it nagging) & gone high tech.

BTW dj, I liked the links to RAF Luqa & Masirah. I did a few tech support trips to Luqa ATC to fettle their AR1 radar. I was then based at 103 MU in Cyprus. Also, I was lucky enough to stop at Masirah on my way from Aden to Sharjah to intall an AR1. I was then based at REU Henlow.
