mk3.5 fuel gauge

I know there are a number of changes/improvements on the mk3.5 but I wasnt aware that they have actually sorted out the 'dodgy' fuel gauge. On the mk3 it was not linear at all. As a rule of thumb from a full tank I'd usually hit the half tank at 180 but would have warning lights and almost empty (needing 42 litres to fill) at 300ish. Also the last quarter as shown on the gauge used to almost vanish in a blink of an eye and you'd be searching out a petrol station

On the mk3.5 its much more linear, half a tank shown is much closer to half the range used/left. The markings have also been changed and the scale now looks linear.

But what you describe is not actually so bad.  If you hit halfway at 180miles a full tank would be 360 miles, you get the light on at 300 and have 8 litres left at 30ish to the gallon that will give you just over 50 miles (I've filled up over 50 miles from the light on and still only got about 48 litres in - Mind you, you tend to drive a little more frugaly when the light's on!), so 350 or a little more for a full tank.  I think the main issue with the fuel gauge is that the first and last major division are 'shrunken' and the needle will go beyond their extremes but I always get 85-90miles per major division.

The example with 180 at half and a 300 range was 300 arriving way past the light coming on, a good 30 miles past it.

Driven the new one for 3 tank fulls now and every time so far the needle hits half way at 150 and I think I'm 'down' on consumption but then I get the same range and the reported mpg (handy new feature) is around the 33mpg I always got. I agree though the spacing is linear now so it make be just that. Makes it more predictable now

I recently went for a good 30 miles after the light came on.  Needle was firmly at empty and I was beginning to panic - in a strange area, no filling stations in sight.  When I filled up, I could only get 43 litres in there, so I must still have had 7 litres left!

On my mk3 I get 40 litres into the tank as soon as the light comes on. So assuming there is 10litres left and you do 30mpg you should get around 66 miles after the light is on before running out of fuel. I get 200 miles from the first half tank and another 100 miles for the rest until the light comes on.
