Reproofed canvas softtop not beading?

Content is edited

Hi Guys,

Over the weekend I reproofed the soft top on my 03 MX5 Nevada. I used the Autoglym kit.

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_185456_langId_-1_categoryId_255237#tab0

Cleaned first, then proofed while still slightly wet ( as per bottle instructions ). Left car inside under a well protected carport for over 24 hours.

Today it is raining on and off, I noticed tiny beads but in the main when heavier rain it still doesnt seem to bead ( with large droplets ) like a previous MX Canvas top I had ( and reproofed also ). In side around the door fringes, above ones head the water is slightly soaking through.

I wonder is the canvas "shot"?

The following picture was pre reproofing:

At least and at the moment since reproofing this IS NOT happening any more, jury is out until we get a good sustained blast of rain.

Here are two pictures of the canvas softtop in the rain:

    AND

NOTE the small beads in the first picture, is this a good result? In the second photo under the back window unit note "soaking" - is this normal OR is it because I may have missed a bit? Though I remember spraying this area also ..

While on the topic - you know the canvas area that is below the bodywork and not very accessible? How does one proof that? Water is rolling down there to the rain rail I imagine?

Had a chat over phone with mechanic re this.

From his experience he reckons I need to do a few more applications to build up waterproofness.

He did mention maybe initial proofing should be done with a paint on product. That the Autoglym spray is good after this for topping up?

As I said earlier I used fabsil which is a liquid applied with a brush. I gave it two generous coats leaving two days between each coat. As for the bit below the window I found I could Push the paint brush down there heavily loaded with the liquid and hoped it would soak its way into all the nooks and crannies. I didn't measure how much I used but it must have been about 1.5 - 2 ltrs. I was lucky, I managed to get a 5ltrs for £25 as the can was badly dented, but not lesaking.

    Hi

After using Auto Glym last year I was not that impressed. I have just bought some Fabsil and will be giving it a go tonight while the car is under cover. I will post some pictures when complete. Smile

Unfortuhnately you are using the wrong product!!!!

I made the same mistake when I bought my MK11 and Halfords are about as much use as  a plastic fire-guard when asking questions about their re-sale products.

The Kit you have is for FABRIC roofs (i.e. NOT Canvas). [Small print disclosure on product; very naughty].

For Canvas roofs the following really does work ...

    (1) Clean with Autglym interior shampoo.

    (2) Apply oodles of Autoglym Vinyl and Rubber care (allowing the application to be even but do not clear-off by over smoothing out) .... apply about three even coats and allow drying between each probably works best.

The roof dries dark (and beautiful) with a high shine (the Silicon reflection).

Once dry just throw a cup full or two over the roof and if it has worked (which it will have) heavy beeding will be seen.

Does it work, my roof is 13 years old and looks like new, so I would say 'YES'!

Renovo products are IMHO the best for mazda canvas roofs waterproofing. They are not cheap.

Make sure you buy the right product, the one for canvas, not any other fabric/plastic. For a really good  and waterproof finish, you have to buy 3 separate bottles.

Renovo canvas cleaner, follow instructions and wash your canvas thoroughly. Allow to dry completely. Renovo colour is then applied, brings the canvas back to colour. Allow to dry completely. Renovo canvas waterproofer is then applied by brush, to all parts of roof, this means lowering the roof a little to get at hidden bits.

If you are thorough and patient, allowing it to dry completely between each process, you will have a waterproof and very smart roof that will only need  waterproofing every 6 months (if left outside ) or couple of years (if garaged).

Canvas is fabric.  The other kind is vinyl. What you're talking about is vinyl - it would ruin a fabric (canvas) hood.

The hood in those photos is fabric (canvas) not vinyl (plastic)
