Road Tax Again

Hi to all Seasonal MX5 owners on here , I know there are still some. It`s the season to get on the road again with a few open air miles ahead.  Anyone noticed the cost increases on the road tax yet again. I taxed mine in March 2010 for £215, last March 2011 it was £235, this year it is £245 and if I had left it to the 1st of April it would have been £250.That`s £35 in just two years.   Come on Mr Chancellor are you taking the p--- .  Us guys who enjoy about a thousand miles a year in our small sports cars paying £250  a year for the privilege and other gas guzzling (lower emission) vehicles on the road daily doing up to 20,000/30,000 a year for very little road tax.   Who is using the roads more and emitting higher emissions??  Seems there needs to be a pay per mile for these type of low mileage vehicles.  Free or very low road tax charges need to be brought in, same as the classic car band at least. Angry

Well you do already pay by the mile and by the gas-guzzling nature or your vehicle each time you fill up but why bother taxing someone once if you can tax them twice or more?  So you get the RFL as well.  Putting the tax on fuel in place of RFL has been talked about many times over the years and the argument was that it gave the authorities an opportunity to check the insurance and MOT status of the vehicle, that argument has gone now (and was pretty limp before) really in these days of online databases and ANPR but why give up on a good thing?

i'm tired of the constant double talk in the world. toll ways are only supposed to be there until the road is payed for, but if you never stop working on the thing, then you never stop takng tolls, so thats a scam, i hate the thought of the upcoming illinois bullet tax, and i'm sure they'll come up with a mazda tax now that it isnt owned by ford. UGH

The classic car free tax was originally intended to run on a rolling 25 year timescale. Halted by the Labour Chancellor in 1997, so effectively no car registered after 1972 gets the concession. Unfortunately my 1973 registered GT6 falls outside this bracket.

OP is there not an option to SORN you vehicle, as it appears you only use it for part of the year, then only tax it for the time you are using it?

Of you only tax or insure you vehicle for only part of the year you have to SORN it (for the other part), the only 'option' to doing this is to pay a hefty and automatic fine.  And don't forget you have to renew the SORN every year and you may not get a reminder like you do with the tax.

A long shot lonescout, but have you checked the date of manufacture of your GT6? That's the crucial date, not the date of first registration - an owner's club registrar should be able to tell you from the chassis number. I only know this because I had an April '73 registered Scimitar GTE, which turned out to have been built in....

    ....Feb '73. Doh!

lonescout, not intending to teach you to suck eggs as you may already know this.       I had a classic bike which was 1973, but on getting a manafacture date from the owners club qualified for historic tax. as its year of manufacture.  most 73 vehicles have a 72 manafacture year.

Retired and spending the kids inheritance. and loving my MX5.

Yeah, thanks guys, been down that road. Manufactured June'73 then registered August '73 Cry. It is, however, in the SORN grey area as I took it off the road in '96, so strictly speaking it doesn't have to be SORNed.

All that is bound to happen is as the tax goes up so does the evasion rate.

I'd say put it all on fuel but keep the tax disc at a nominal fee of £10 per year as I do believe all vehicles should be registered and checked for MOT and insurance at least once a year. While I'd make the disc cheap, the fine for not having one would be massive and disproportionate to deter at least some from non payment (remembering that you would need to be insured too to get a disc)

I apologise for jumping in on this thread but could someone clarify the following for me.

My BMW motorbike was relegated permanently to my garage ever since buying my MX5.   The bike was Sorned and now its tax and insurance have run out.   From what I just read here I am responsible to re Sorn the bike every year as long as Ii have it in my garage?  Is that correct?

Basically yes, although as has already been mentioned here not if it's been off the road since before the legislation was brought in. It doesn't cost anything (iirc) but it is your responsibility to ensure the sorn info is renewed every year
