high peformance air filter

I have just bought a torque universal air filter from Argos and this is not as universal as I had hoped!

I need a square to round mounting adapator and heat shield. Can anyone advise me please?

I'm afraid these things can be a contradiction in terms. Far from Hi performance ( unless you cunningly force cold air directly into it) they are prone to sucking in superheated air from the manifold even with a baffle. A £30.00 K&N pad filter in the original airbox is best really. I took my cone filter off, flogged it, and refitted what God intended..car runs sweet as a nut again.

Are K&N really best? I'm told that they let more air in but they also therefore let more dirt in, increasing engine wear. And the best thing is to get an original Mazda filter. Do K&N versions make any improvement to performance? ['95 1.8 NA]

    Hi...

    I had K&N on my Mk1 & 2.5 (the typhoon kit)....

While it didn't make any noticable difference performance wise, think you would need a good quality exhaust too to see anything worthwhile.... They can also make the engine a bit lumpy in stop/start traffic due to the engine heat.

But I just loved the 'induction roar'.....

In my experience, aftermarket "performance" air filters are usually surrounded by a load of advertising hype. Years back, being an engineer, I spannered now and then for a mate who ran an Escort rally car where it was noticeable that most of the entrants used standard OE air fiters. They used to call K&N, "The instant rebore kit" back then because they let so much grit and other rubbish past the filter - and I've seen first hand the results of what that can that do. Maybe they've improved them these days but I'll still never use one based on the damage I've seen them cause. I've also been told over the years by reputable people who have access to flow bench and other test eqpt that most makes flow very little if any more air than the std OE filter.

When I had my '95 1.8 Eunos I made a cold air intake as an experiment - using the standard OE filter. I fabricated a NACA duct in the n/s headlamp cover to get the cold air in and the difference was immediately noticeable - not earth shattering but the improvement was probably better than a K&N or whatever, and it was a lot cheaper - and safer for the engine. Getting denser, cold air in there will do more for performance than any fancy, expensive piece of rubbish ever could.   http://www.oldgitbiker.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/MX-5%20page%202.htm
