Mk1 MX5 - Project restoration

Content is edited

Hi all.

Picked this up last weekend - 1996 MX5 Mk1

Plans are:
Full respray, dent removal and rust treated.

New soft top. - Bought a black one for £50 earlier today.

Cheap radio

New interior or re-trim the drivers seat.

New ariel

Cambelt - Phoned Mazda today, £38 for a belt, if the cost of labour isn't too much I'll get it done at the main dealer. Pleasant surprise Smile

Also ordered some new bolts for the airbox lid, just over £2 each (x4). And the 2 screws that hold the swivel things in place on the hardtop. £4 each!

Still waiting for my friend to get back to me with the cost of respray & dent removal.

Main dealers are extremely expensive for cambelts. Try local guys with good rep I'd say. I'd advise chucking in a new water pump while you are there! As for the rust, fortunately replacement panels are "only" around £70.00 per side, and to be quite honest yours look the proverbial "tip of the iceberg". You perhaps could save by skipping the respray painting the bonnet,  fade in at the dint, and rear arches then get a claybar/orbital detail job done on the rest. A proper lasting rear arch job is typically £250/300.00 per side all in. The rest of the car does not look to bad from "here" I'm sure you'd agree there's a fine line between sanity & insanity in these things! For further advice , bits, and general assistance I'd join Mx5 Nutz  for the spare bits "for sale" section alone.

    Good luck...you have a big heart!Thumbs up

    Thanks.

Going to do the cambelt myself & I'll replace the waterpump too, Mazda said that they don't usually bother.

But it's good practice to change the pump & tensioner.

Got some quotes on the bodywork today.

Cut out rear arch & weld in a new piece, £80inc VAT

Respray is being done through a friend in the trade for £300inc VAT

Every panel is damaged/scratched down to the metal & it won't come out with my machine polisher.

But I'm doing all the prep & wet flatting... fun!

£80 per arch is dirt cheap. A friend doing the welding?

     I'm not complaining.

I went to 2 bodyshops in Salisbury. One large crash repair place, they quoted me £330 per side, UNPAINTED!.

Then I went to a smaller Japanese specialist garage in the industrial estate, the guy was actually doing some welding when I walked through the door, looked like a good job too.

I showed him the picture & he said it'll be 2 hours labour so £80-90 :)

I've now sourced some seats & doorcards :)

Try and get some pictures of the job as it progresses. Useful here and for your own records.

     I will be taking photos.

Removed the drivers seat yesterday evening, passenger ones bolts are too tight to undo by hand so I'm borrowing an impact wrench.

New soft top arrived yesterday, the rear window zip needs re stitching but it's a bargain at £50 with frame!

New door cards fitted along with new seatbelts and seats.

Rusty arches cleaned up and a dab of paint.

Paint colour is wrong, but it's only temporary and looks better than grey primer from a distance.

It's now road worthy, got it MOT'd yesterday and taxed today :)

Got some replacement rear 1/4 panels to weld in, that's being done next week.

Paint will be end of May or early June :)
