Original Alloy wheel difference questions

On refurbishing my alloy wheels I realised one set are different to the other set. They have a line coming from front to back on the inside of the wheel for each spoke, aprox 3mm high 10cm long into the middle of the inside of the wheel, its raised and is part of the original casting. The other set don’t have this in that they are flat all the way round the inside. Given that I’m quick finding out most things on this car function as well as look the part I suspect it’s a weight/balancing thing possibly for front to back side to side. The wheels differ only in one other way and that is that a small set of boxes (type set into the wheel centre front) with dots in them don’t share the same number at the end of these sets of boxes. On one set is typed 92 the other 93. Now given that that tells me a difference is present....

Does anyone have any ideas what the difference might be, and since the wheels have been moved before are they to be paired front and back or one side to the other side? What I mean is balance front or back balance left or right? Balance at all?

The 92 and 93 could be the year of manufacture of the wheels as your car is a '94

It is possible that a pair of wheels were damaged and replaced with new ones and there were slight differences in the design between 1992 and 1993?

Could you upload any photos and those more in the know may be more able to help you

Yep I will get some uploaded ASAP. It’s really odd because it’s as if these are two different sets! So yeah had considered the accident scenario but then again the only way two would be replaced is a full side swipe or a massive rear impact and I can tell the car has not had that level of issues. Everything is straight and the age of components corresponds. It’s as if it is intentional.

Anyway.... maybe some photo will help solve this mystery. (cant find anything else on the net or forums)

Hi I would not worry too much if the wheels look the same when fitted on the car and as you say you cannot find any accident evidence . It is quite easy to buckle these wheels if you drop one down a pothole ,and as the car has been around a while this could easily happen . Also a fussy owner may have replaced them after having badly kerbed them. I replaced 2 wheels on my Mk 3 during the time I had it due to buckled wheels which affected the car by vibrations at motorway speeds .
