Service Costs

Hi,

I've just purchased my first mx5.  It's a 51 plate and has done 49,000.  I've called my local Mazda dealer who has quoted me almost £600 for a full service & cambelt service.

Does this sound right?  I don't mind paying if that's what it costs, but obviously reluctant if I'm just getting ripped off?

Thanks - Chris

    Hi Chris (and welcome)

I don't know about mk2s but what i would do is ring around other dealers just to see what they would charge and seriously consider a non-dealer service if you can find someone in your area that are happy to do your car

    Hi,

Thanks for this.  What concerns me with using other dealers is they won't use Mazda parts and a concern of mine is how well they will do the job.  I use different dealers for my other cars but as have never owned a Mazda before not sure how much this matters.

    Thanks - Chris

Other Mazda dealers will offer different prices, and some should be less than what you have been quoted.

As for the OEM verses pattern parts, it all depends on the part. If you find an independent MX-5 specialist they will know which ones are any good and make the appropriate choice.

Sounds very expensive to me. Here is an example from an independant MX5 specialist in Nuneaton who I use for my MK3 , (not all that far from Derbyshire)

Details taken off his website home page  http://www.samgoodwin.com/

    Full Service £249 (£269 MK2.5 VVTI)
Includes: Cam belt, Fan belt, Power-steering belt, New NGK spark plugs, Semi-synthetic engine oil, New air filter, New oil filter, Wheels off and brakes checked/report, lights checked, screen wash topped up, tyres checked + all other levels checked with report. ...All inclusive price.

I would recommend give him a call and have a chat. Take a day trip and save a lot of money.

I really wouldn't pay that mate! Mine is a similar age, and I wouldn't be surprised to get quoted that as they always try it on. Some people will just pay. I reckon shop around and a lot of dealers will price match- after all a lot are closing down these days!

I get genuine Mazda parts (more expensive then others, but this is my pride and joy we are talking about!) and give them to my mechanic to fit (happens to be my bro in law). really at that age car you don't really need to get bogged down with stamping your log book, I would get  a local person you trust- or one recommended on here or the oc site and give them the genuine Mazda parts. I should think you can get it serviced and pay for 12 months road tax and some petrol for £600 even with the cam belt! get them to fill your book out, and staple on the recipts should anyone ask when you resell.

There is also a degree of power in the following question "what discount do you give to owner's club members?"... of course, being a member is rather useful as well Grinner

  7. RE: Service Costs

    Thanks for this everyone.

I've contacted Sam Goodwin who have said they don't use genuine Mazda parts.  I've also contacted my local Mazda dealer again who have said as I'm a member of the OC they will give me 5% discount.

I've called a number of local dealers who can do it alot cheaper but without using Mazda parts, I would definatley prefer to use Mazda parts.

Decisions decisions decisions.  I think I'll go with Mazda and pay the little bit extra

    Thanks - Chris

Out here 600 pounds converts to about $1,000. If anyone quoted me that out here I would probably say some rude words and tell them to forget it.

    Hi Chris... 5%!!!!?????
bleedin' 'ell, they're 'aving a giraffe!
I got 15% from mine with only a 'do you do anything for owner's club?'
    I rang three different dealerships.
My usual didn't have anyone from the right dept. The second furthest reduced by about 12%.. maybe a bit less and no. 3 came up trumps.
Yes i had to travel further but... two things
    1) it put me in a place to check out some roads near some family
    and
    2) in an mx5 distance isn't always the issue Drunk

  10. RE: Service Costs

Anything to do with a cam belt change costs a lot- I have a Mazda 6 as well and the quote was expensive- but I have shopped around and my local dealer is on par with the others- best thing to do is to check other mazda dealers- and show the prices to your's- mine came down on their price
