WOW!!! INSURANCE!!!

Content is edited

Hi all,

i love my car and love driving it every second. i live in a relitively quiet end of reading. life is good and the paint glistens after a good wash and wax!!! (wish i could do that, really do miss the waxing!!)

I had my renewal quote 4 months ago and was shocked at what direct line quoted me.

was £442 fully comp

renewal was £664 ??? needless to say i finished my policy.

i sort of understand the jump in price after the winter of mad snow and so many accidents.

as i've had the old girl off the road for repairs and fettling i thought i'd get another quote to see what was happening with the market.

I have to say i'm glad i was already sitting down as the prices i've got back are nothing less than **** (word i cant say)

the cheepest so far was £718 fully comp from a company i've never heard of on the go compare website.

direct line want to now charge me £874.65... WOW!!! thats nearly double what i paid last year!!!

seems to be a bit excessive as im 29 and only drive a car with 130 bhp when it was new!

looks like the cheap sports car is a thing of the past people!

    Hi there.

I guess your age is against you a bit.  I find one of the few advantages of growing older is that your car insurance rates go down.  My previous sports car was a 321 BHP sports car group 20 and the insurance was still lower than those you have been quoted.  Have you tried a company called 'Britt'?  I have found them very competetive.  The other thing you coudl try is calling some of the classic car insurance copany's in the classic car mags.

    Good luck with it.

You're inadvertantly comparing two different kinds of insurance groups. There's the 1-20 group, and a new 1-50 group. The newer 1-50 is EU-wide iirc.

For insurance, it's always best to use price comparison sites like moneysupermarket, comparethemarket, gocompare. Use multiple comparison sites, some give you better quotes than others, even with the same insurance companies. They're all set up to get the cheapest quotes, so depending on circumstances they can sometimes get a cheaper quote than usual.

I know there are different insurance categories in use, I am more familiar with the 0-20 version which my current insurance company (Britt) seem to use.  They classed my previous BMW Z3M Coupe as a group 20 and my current MX-5 as a group 14.  It's all very confusing!!  Undecided

Are we assuming that in the past year you've had no accidents/claims?

To have doubled does indeed seem a bit much. The best quote I had was from Adrian Flux, have you tried them?

Insurance, yeah the world of making up figures. At age 29 I really don't see age now being a factor, assuming you have had long term driving experience i.e you didn't just pass your test last year.

As a benchmark, my 23 year old daughter passed her test in Dec 2009 and is paying under £1k on a 57 plate Fiesta 1.25. OK completely different car but what on earth is going on when a 23 year old with no driving experience can be insured, Fully Comp BTW, and a 29yr old with we are assuming many years insurance is paying nigh on the same for lets be honest a lovely sports car but not exacly a ball of fire and not exactly new.

Gotta say Blue, get down to some serious searching, £718 & £874 is taking the, (and I can say this word), piss.

    Dreadful

    Steve.

P.S. Just had a play on Direct Line to see if there has been something that has caused premiums to shoot through the roof, it appears not, I can insure my 57 plate MK3 2.0 Sport for under £200 fully comp. Granted I am now 50 but seriously at age 29, your age should not be causing crippling premiums as you have been quoted.

OUCH indeed but looks like you got a deal in the end. I too found Direct Line not just expensive but absolutely silly on renewal for SDP only and restricted to 5000miles - it worked out at more per mile than the fuel !.  Fortunately there are some good deals out there and as you get older insurance gets cheaper.

I am of more mature years, full NCB, with no accidents or convictions (ever). Their reply to my complaint suggested I was an significantly increased risk due to the word 'Sport' yet my oil burner estate does many more miles, is signicantly quicker, and is used in all weather and traffic  conditions.  The price for the workhorse was realistic but they lost all my business.

What they also don't tell customers about on their 'We don't subscribe to price comparison sites to save customers money' is the very high admin fees and that THEY CHARGE FOR WINDSCREEN CHIP REPAIRS. Would never ever touch them again ever.

  10. RE: WOW!!! INSURANCE!!!

    Hi all,

Thanx ppl for all your input in this grave matter, i have to say that even my partner is feeling the pinch.

she drives a standard pug 306 1.6L 90hp car and her renewal quote was over the £600 mark!!!

she is 24 but has more no claims than me. she is still realing from the figure.

in comparison my quote would be said as a reasonable deal.

but after heart breaking considiration it looks like i will have to sell my baby as i can not longer afford to keep such a lovely car!

i never thought i would be priced out of owning a car through just insurance alone!!!

the decition is not final and i will try every avenue everyone have suggested to keep my baby.

if i do HAVE to sell her i will no doubt be buying another again as i love this car!

i have never driven such a precition machine with everything a driver could want... although a little extra power wouldnt go ammiss, but that would impact the idea of a fun cheep sporty car!!!!
