New alloys and wheel offsets

I'm buy a new set of alloys over the next couple of weeks,

I'm changing from 16" to probably 17" (maybe 18"). I know the original 17" have a n ET55 offset but I'm struugling to find after market alloys with this offset. Does going to a Et40 make much difference to suspension set up etc and does it increase or decrease the track width.

Any help appreciated before I spend the cash

It´s very difficult to find aftermarket alloy wheels with 55 mm offset. Most of them have 40, 45, 48 or may be 50 mm offset (ET).

I´m driving around with 8x18/40 mm offset wheels + 205/40 tyres since a week now and haven´t noticed any difference in comfort or performance between my former wheels with 8x17/ET48 + 215/40 tyres. The car looks much better with the "bigger" wheels and runs like before...in my opinion.

But be careful: At the rear car wings it might be very curt to use 215/40 tyres or wider combined with 40 mm offset, because of the 1 cm plate flange at the inner wheel house. With my tyres (Hankook Ventus S1 Evo 205/40 R18) and 30 mm Eibach lowering, there was only 3-5 mm distance between the tyre side and the flange. Otherwise the inner wheel house flange has to be bended.

Didn´t like to bend the wheel house flanges to avoid rust or paint chipping, so I used the smaller tyres.

Now, with the 18"-wheels, my MKIII looks like I ever wanted it to and goes like before and like it should...Grinner

I would go for 18" wheels over 17" anytime, so that would be the first decision made. I'm currently on 18x8 with a 45mm offset and 225/35/18 tyres. My car is lowered with H&R springs and I have no problem with tyres catching the arches, ( and that includes driving back from France yesterday, with two weeks worth of luggage and 1 or 2 bottles of wine in the boot Wink).

I've had the suspension set up by Revolution in Gateshead with settings I got from WIM and the handling is great. If you want to pop round at the weekend and have look at the set up drop me a pm.
