Engine overheating problem

Hi all, i'm looking for some help in fixing my overheating problem. I've got a 1.8 Mk2.5 Mx5, been a great car until i had an MOT done last month and ever since it has been overheating (it did pass!). Previously the temperature gauge always sat around halfway up, now after a journey of 15 miles plus it goes right up to the max. I can get it to come down by having the heating on full blast but as you can imagine its getting a bit too hot too handle in this weather!

I've cleaned out the radiator core externally as much as possible and replaced the thermostat but no luck. The cooling fan is operating normally as far as i can tell. Any suggestions of what the problem may be and what i can try next?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Chris

Once the build up in the cores as set like stone, there is no way of moving it,the only cure is a new rad,do you know any one with a inferred thermostate gun, that you can fire in spots on the rad to pin point where the blockage is?just to make sure.

Regular fresh antifreeze will stop this happening, and a good make not cheap crap.

Hello..this rings a familiar bell. I bought a 1998 Mk2. from a local garage...with a warranty....3 years ago. It soon became clear that it had a cooling problem.. hence the cheap price!..and looking thru the  service records, it was clear that the previous owner had the same thing. We changed  thermostat/water pump/radiator.etc...before i found that, using a radiant thermometer..there was a big cool spot in the centre of the rad. All I could diagnose was  head gasket causing an oil block in the rad. They took off the head..had it machined, gaskets,,etc.. and its been fine since. all this was done on their warranty cover so didnt cost me anything. They are aonly a few yards from my house.. so I was effectively part of the team. It was a lot of work!..but its a great car...86000 miles now.

I hope it isnt the same thing...but it might be  by the sound of it. If you do change the gaskets..its best to have the head machined  at the same time..to make sure its flat.

    Best of Luck..
