Oil Spots inside rims, is it serious?

Hi there guys.

Its me again, and again with the wheels.

After driving 1200km yesterday, 1130 of which was on the highway, at speeds mostly above 160km/hAngel face for more than 70% of the trip and touching 180 for say 15% (In the karoo towns are more than 300km's apart with no speedtraps in sight and i was exploiting a couple of guys in porsches with laser systems by tailing them) and some understandably heavy breaking situations due to trucks and stuff going at 80, when i got home i noticed what looks to be oily spots on the inside of my front rims with a wet oily look where the rim and the break disc meet, which i presume is where the oily spots came from.

Okay, i also put on new tires about a week ago, and when they put the rims back on the car they smeared some kind of copper stuff between the rim and the break disc which they said helps to prevent rust, now i just want to know, could it be that thats made the oily looking spots on the inside of my rims due to heating up because of the breaking, or is it something i should be worring about like bearings?

Thanks guys, you guys are normally very helpful.

I had my wheels off to clean the suspension etc at the weekend (sad, me?) and treated the wheel studs with a similar grease. I've also got oil spots on the inner rims so I'd lay odds that yours are the same. Keep an eye on them - the spots should cease after the excess grease spins off but if they continue to appear there could be a problem.

I don't think it'll be anything serious, there is nothing 'oily' within the middle of the wheel - apart from the hub and I think that's sealed.

Wouldnt it be doing the same if there were problems with my bearings?

Ha, the Karoo, a great place, my suspension on my Austin Apache collapsed on me one time there many years ago as a student, managed to limp on to Knysa lopside with fluid leaking from the burst pipe!

Knowing that it is Winter, the air will be cooler, but at the speeds you were doing, the grease would not be capable of withstanding those centrifugal forces.  Wheel bearing grease is normally tested for it's ability not to leak from a test device which mimics a wheel at 600rpm for a period of 6 hours.  However, if your wheels were getting hot from the speds/braking you were doing then I'd also ask if there is any trace of oil weeping passed the seals?  I'd listen closely for any rumbling indicating a dry bearing.

By the way, I once managed Kathu/Sishen to Somerset West in 8 hours flat in a Nissan Sentra, and got caught by the speed cops hiding in a donga whilst doing 159km\hr.  Back in 1993 it was a R200 fine.

Take care on the roads! I hear the trapping is done by private firms these days.  Looking forward to a blast up the Garden Route when we visit family at Christmas later this year.

Yep, had that same problem about 3 years ago, got caught on the N1 near Joburg at 167km/h (was late for a flight), got an R800 fine.

Exactly the reason i was tailing a couple of guys with laser systems (cops would catch them first while i pass with a very innocent look on my faceAngel face), no way im taking a chance like that on my own . . . again . . .

Oh, and PE - Bloem, 4.5hrs damn you gotta luv them porsches.

Enjoy the garden route, also planning on blasting down the very same route for an Xmas in the mother city, but thinking bout taking old cape road instead of the n2, will just smile and wave when we passDrunk

Isn't too many places oil/grease could end up on your rims. Either bearings or brake fluid. Don't know if your shocks are oil or gas filled.

I would check everything. Jack each wheel up and spin for noise and check for movement. Take the wheel off and check if any oil/grease is visible.

Mazda MX5s will run at those speeds consistently. Just remember you have very little reaction time if something goes wrong.

I collided with a vehicle at 130 kph when I was your age and still carry the scars 41 years later. You be careful.
