New Tyres fitted

Hello all! been a while since Ive been on here (still not keen on the new layout!). Anyhoo, just had my 4th year service and had some new tyres fitted . However, I think they are wrong (the garage ordered them so it's as much my fault for not taking control but as it was about to fail the MOT I let the experienced mechanic get on with it)  . They have replaced my original Michelin Precedas on my 2ltr Sport 17", with Pirelli P Zeros at 205/55/R17/88 V

I think this is wrong as I think it will upset my gear ratios and I think it should be on a W rating and not V. I;m pretty sure I should only be on 205/45 17 nn W (can't remember what the nn bit is!)

Before I get on my high horse, am I right to insist on a change?!

Will it make any difference if I leave these ones on it?

I did try searching the forum first but I just can't seem to find the info on here as easily as I used to!

Thank you!

    Hi mozza!

In my opinion you must insist on the correct tyre size and you have the right to! Which stupid mechanic appointed these wrong tyres...? Red cross

He should have known that 205/55 Pirellis are much too big for your MKIII and should have taken a simple look in the registration document. It shows the right tyre size. Furthermore it´s a matter of savety to drive around with the wrong tyres. The speedo always shows the wrong driving speed, because the tyre diameter isn´t correct.

205/45 R17 is the proper tyre size for the standard MKIII 7x17 inch wheel and it doesn´t have to be the speed limit W. You can also choose a Y or V one or tyres with a higher load index like the standard 84W, like 88W or so on. But they may be harsher and less comfortable. Pirelli P Zero´s in 205/45 R17 with 84W or little higher load index and everything will be ok.

Please let your garage change the tyres asap. and without any charges...! After the tyres have been changed you should search for an alternative garage...! Wink

    Regards

    Carsten

Yes they have fitted the wrong size tyres for sure...I have been looking in to some new Toyos recently and it's the 205/45/17 you need, they should have known that, and i'm sure if you take them the hand book they will change them.  Just out of interest, could I ask how much your 4th year service was?  I reluctantly took my 2.0 ltr sport to a Mazda dealer the other day for the 4th and paid a whopping £269!!!!  and all for a few drops of oil!  Good luck with the tyres,

thanks chaps! will contact the garage tomorrow. My service was approx £320 but I got 20% off as a valued customer (and 20% off the MOT price too) as they have stopped selling Mazdas at the Ford dealership but want to keep Mazda sevicing. Must admit the car does sound better since the service. However they didn't wash it so it is really grotty. Never ind, at least I'll do a proper job on it when I get around to it and I'll be careful washing off the volcanic dust.

did the 320 include the tyres? £400 less 20%  = the £320 you paid, so maybe £200 for the service and £200 for the tyres (then discount it)  wouldnt be a bad deal.  How many tyres did you need and what was the cost breakdown?

Just had my 4th year service as a local MX5 specialist garage. £89 for the basic service (engine oil, filter etc) plus extra £25 for the diff oil change and £40 for the brake fluid replacement +VAT. Plugs dont get changed til the 5th year and air filter only gets cleaned on the 4th. My total bill inc vat was £180.95. When I checked the price at the local Mazda dealer, they initially quoted me £210 and when I said I wanted to get more prices, he immediately said if I made a booking there and then, he would discount it 10% making it £189. If he had said £189 to start with instead of trying to rip me off, I MIGHT have considered it. As it was, he lost my business.

Wholeheartedly agree that they MUST put the correct tyres on, do not let them try to pursuade you otherwise or blag it by suggesting that was the size tyres you had on previously. You can check out the prices of the correct tyres at http://www.valuetyres.co.uk/ which is where I got the best price and got mine from.

Get stuck into them. There is no excuse for getting the tyre size wrong. All Mazdas have a tyre plaque. Both my 2001 MX5 and 2008 Mazda 3 MPS have them fitted on the panel where the front door latch is. I have perellis on my Mx5 and find they tranline at low speeds.

    Own a 2001 Green Mazda MX5. Have previously owned a 1990 and 1998 model.

Surely the correct size of tyre is obvious by looking at what's written on the tyres they take off?

Right as ever Titus, and as Mozza indicated that the ones replaced were original the size must have been right.

If you change the tyre size you should tell the insurance and they may increase the premium, why should you have to do this (or suffer the consequences) due to someone elses mistake?

In any case I don't see why anyone would choose a higher profile, normally it would be a case of going to a lower profile if you decided to fit wider (215 for instance) tyres and going from 45 to 55 will be quite a hike, when I changed to 215s I left the profile at 45 so the sidewall height has increased slightly and it is very noticable but not by as much as these so they must look odd if nothing else.

All sorted! They rang me to tell before i could ring them. Correct tyres on and I have to admit I like them. They feel better than my Michelins and the ride feels different, slightly softer.

Overall costs were: £731. Included Tyres, Service & Mot. tyres ae on the invoice as £135 each but I think I paid less than that. I had a 20% off Service & MOT letter butI suspect I have had that off of the entire bill. Either way, I'm happy! Got my car back, lovely new black boots and it sounds low and growly again. Perfect. Roll on Summer!
