Engine Immobilised

Hi there everyone. I am a new member and have a problem with my car, an MX5 2.0i Sport (2006) Six speed.

We did not use the car for over 10 months and when we tried to recharge the battery and strat up again all the lights and dashboard instruments function but the engine will not start. The internal locking system is not functioning nor is the boot lid opening system. We have tried another battery so it is not a battery fault. Although the lights come on on the key (not advanced key) fob there is no reation in the car - the door locks do not work, the alarm system does not seem to operate and the boot opening function does not operate.

If anyone can help us here with some advise we will be most grateful.

When you tried to start it was it just completely dead or was there any movement from the starter motor?

And did you prep the car for storage?

Sounds like the immobiliser has been triggered.  This being an "official" Mazda site, you'd think there would be a definitive response from the manufacturer, wouldn't you.  No such luck....

Hope you get it sorted - there's probably some set procedure for re-setting things.

Haven't a clue as too your problem. However, in future you should keep the battery hooked up to a battery tender if you are going to keep it off the road for long periods. This stops these awkward moments of lifelassness come spring time.

Is it possible that the keyfob has become 'out of sync' with the car?  I belive the key fob and the car are on a 'rolling code' so if the fob button is pressed while away from the car it will roll on but the car won't, if the codes are out of sync by about 10 the car will no longer respond to the key.  Hope this makes sense.  I think there is a reset procedure in the manual if you have it.

Firstly, thanks to everyone who has added advise here. From what I can gather and the findings of a local mechanic who has helped me, it seems like it is indeed the fact that the key has become detached from the car code. I believe there is a sequence for resolving this but the dealer (who is nearly 20 miles from my house) refuses to give it to my local mechanic and it is not in the car's manual.

This is extremely frustrating for us as we have family coming to visit in a couple of weeks and wanted to have the car running for them.

We would be really graeful if anyone can help us.

Hi sorry to hear about your dilema  To verify if the key transponder is working  ;-

there will be a flashing red car with key inset in the ' oil gauge ' put the key in the ignition and turn on; this light should stop flashing ,come on fully for a few seconds and then go out . If this happens then you have switched off the immobiliser and you should check all fuses including the main solid fuse .if the light remains then ,if you have a spare key try this ; if not ,call out your breakdown cover ,they can reprogram keys ,or finally call out a mobile locksmith who will tell you if he can reprogramme your key using his machine  this may cost up to £80
