Mazda MX-5 racing on ice

During the last couple of months snow and ice have been popular topics in the MX-5.com forums. Members have been discussing how to cope with driving in the adverse weather conditions we’ve seen across many European countries this winter.

Last month a few lucky fans and journalists from all over the world got the chance to put their winter driving skills to the ultimate test at the Mazda MX-5 Ice Race in Åre, Sweden. Twenty modified racing MX-5s fitted with spike tyres were specially prepared to cope with the extreme polar conditions. With temperatures dipping as low as -31º C the contestants set out to complete four days of training and racing on the icy surface. The event culminated with a four hour race round a 5km long circuit. It was close, but in the end team Russia took home the first place followed by Australia and Belgium.

Looks amazing, although that video is ruthlessly edited, would prefer to see each car for a bit longer, especially the yellow one as it really stands out against the snow!
