Mazda MX-5 in the running for the What Car? Car of the Year awards 2011

The Mazda MX-5 was recently shortlisted for What Car?’s annual awards in the Open-top category along with the BMW Z4 and the Mercedes-Benz E350.

In their presentation of the contenders, What Car? writes: “Few people are as devoted to their cars as MX-5 owners, and if you’ve ever driven one you’ll understand exactly why.” We can only say that we completely agree.

Pete Tullin, the Road test editor, says:

“There are few greater or guiltier pleasures than whistling along a country lane with the roof down, listening to the rasp of a throaty exhaust bouncing off the scenery.
Few roadsters tap into this feeling better than a BMW Z4 or Mazda MX-5. Each has the essential ingredients to thrill. They’ve both got that classic front-engined, rear-wheel-drive layout, razor-sharp steering and a snappy gearchange.”
