How Mazda reinvented the classic British sports car

The Huffington Post has a great article that looks back on how Mazda came up with the original concept for the Mazda MX-5 and effectively reinvented the classic British sports car.

It tells the story of how Bob Hall, who was head of Mazda’s North American Division at the time, turned his dreams about creating “a sexy fun to drive, good performing and affordable sports car” into reality with hardly any budget and no approval from the management.

The article offers some great quotes from the original design team along with cool photos of the Japanese management checking out the first MX-5 prototypes.

“These special cars set hearts racing and pulses pounding. They put the joy back into driving and can even make the daily commute an adventure. While there are arguments to be made that we don't really need sports cars, you should slip behind the wheel of one and see how you really feel.”

We couldn't agree more.

Thats a really interesting article. And its nicely written. Some of the comments posted about it are funny.. like the one about the RX8. Thats like saying 'if you want a fas car buy a porsche'.. talk about completely missing the point! Laughed at the one saying 'its like an NG that er, goes'
    Thanks Admin!

Great Article. Mazda brought out a book showing the development of the MX5. I borrowed it from the dealer here in Scone.
Someone once said. "The MX5 is like owning a British sports car without the maintenance hassles". How correct.
